About the Role
The Legal Advisor and Researcher will support Amnesty International’s work to promote accountability for human rights-related corporate abuses, including conduct that may constitute criminal offences.
The successful candidate will conduct and support desk and field investigations into corporate human rights abuses and legal violations. The role also involves examining corporate structures and financial flows, providing legal research and advice, and identifying potential criminal offences and legal pathways for justice.
The position will also provide international human rights law expertise to colleagues involved in research, campaigning and corporate accountability initiatives. The successful applicant may review organisational outputs such as reports, amicus briefs and press releases.
Key Responsibilities
The Legal Advisor and Researcher will lead Amnesty International’s work on corporate crimes and accountability, including projects supported by external grants. Responsibilities include contributing to strategic direction, maintaining relationships with stakeholders and representing Amnesty International in relevant engagements.
The role will involve investigating corporate actors, researching legal breaches and human rights abuses, and supporting cases that may require engagement with law enforcement agencies. The successful candidate will also advise on the strategic use of human rights mechanisms and national, regional and international tribunals.
Skills and Experience
Applicants should have a professional legal qualification allowing them to practise law in at least one jurisdiction, or recognition as an outstanding international lawyer, together with relevant legal practice experience.
Applicants should also have strong knowledge or professional experience in areas such as:
- International human rights law
- International humanitarian law
- International criminal law
- Domestic criminal law
- Corporate law
- Economic law
- Corporate crime investigations
- Legal avenues for justice at national and international levels
Experience investigating human rights-related corporate crimes and identifying appropriate legal strategies will be particularly relevant to the position.
