World Bank Scholarships 2027: Fully Funded Master’s Scholarships for Developing Country Nationals

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) 2027 offers eligible professionals from developing countries an opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in a development-related field with comprehensive financial support. The programme is designed to equip professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

For the 2027 academic cycle, the programme has announced two application windows. Candidates must first secure admission to an eligible participating master’s programme before they can be considered for the scholarship.

What Is the World Bank Scholarship Program?

The JJ/WBGSP is a scholarship initiative supported by the Government of Japan and the World Bank. It targets experienced development professionals who want to strengthen their expertise through postgraduate education.

For 2027, the programme lists 44 participating master’s programmes across 24 universities in the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania and Japan. Areas of study include economic policy management, tax policy, infrastructure management and other development-related disciplines.

Important: Applicants must be admitted to one of the designated participating master’s programmes. Admission to a university or master’s course outside this list does not qualify a candidate for the scholarship.

World Bank Scholarships 2027 Application Deadlines

The application process is organised into two windows to accommodate the academic calendars of participating universities.

  • Window 1: 18 January – 26 February 2027
  • Window 2: 29 March – 21 May 2027

Applicants should confirm which window applies to their chosen master’s programme and check the official scholarship website for the relevant application guidelines.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

Successful applicants receive financial support intended to cover major expenses associated with postgraduate study. The scholarship package includes:

  • Full tuition fees.
  • A monthly living stipend.
  • Round-trip economy-class airfare.
  • Health insurance.
  • A travel allowance.

Candidates should consult the official programme information for the detailed terms and conditions governing these benefits.

Scholarship recipients are expected to return to their home countries after graduation and apply their newly acquired skills to support national development.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

The scholarship is intended for nationals of eligible developing countries who have relevant professional experience and a demonstrated commitment to development.

Applicants must generally meet the following requirements:

  • Be a national of an eligible World Bank member developing country.
  • Not hold dual citizenship of a developed country.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification obtained at least three years before the scholarship application deadline.
  • Have at least three years of paid development-related employment acquired within the six years preceding the application deadline.
  • Be employed full-time in paid development-related work when submitting the scholarship application.
  • Have unconditional admission, except for funding, to an eligible participating master’s programme outside their country of citizenship and country of residence.
  • Submit the required admission documentation before applying for the scholarship.

Additional restrictions apply, including rules concerning certain World Bank Group staff members and close relatives, as well as individuals who previously declined or failed to complete a JJ/WBGSP scholarship.

Eligibility requirements are strictly enforced. Prospective applicants should read the official guidelines carefully before beginning the application process.

How to Apply for the World Bank Scholarship 2027

The application process begins with selecting an eligible master’s programme. Follow these steps:

  1. Review eligible countries: Confirm that your country of citizenship appears on the official list of eligible countries.
  2. Choose a participating master’s programme: Explore the designated programmes and identify one aligned with your professional background.
  3. Apply for university admission: Submit your application directly to the participating university and secure unconditional admission, except for funding.
  4. Check the application window: Confirm the relevant deadline and requirements for your selected programme.
  5. Prepare your documents: Gather your academic qualifications, employment information, admission letter and any other documents required by the guidelines.
  6. Submit the scholarship application: Follow the instructions provided through the participating university and the official scholarship process.

The scholarship application link is communicated to candidates who meet the admission requirements and have been shortlisted as eligible by their participating university.

Why Consider the JJ/WBGSP?

For professionals working in development, public policy, economics, infrastructure and related fields, the programme offers an opportunity to pursue advanced education while receiving substantial financial support.

Candidates should plan early, as university admission is a prerequisite for scholarship consideration. Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee selection.
