Key Fellowship Details

  • Duration: 3-4 months (April – July 2025)
  • Location: Flexible, with the option to work remotely from your current location
  • Remuneration: £500 per month, totaling £2,000 for the duration of the fellowship

What Will You Do as a Fellow?

During the Digital Forensics Fellowship, you will:

  1. Attend In-Person Training
    A week-long training event in June 2025, where you will be introduced to advanced digital forensics and security techniques.
  2. Remote Learning
    Dedicate 10-12 hours per month outside of in-person sessions to remote training and independent work, building on your skills to tackle online threats.
  3. Collaborate with Global Experts
    Engage with Amnesty Tech’s Security Lab and connect with other fellows to share insights, challenges, and solutions in digital investigations.
  4. Conduct Investigations
    Participate in real-world digital forensics cases, identifying digital attacks and spyware targeting HRDs, journalists, and civil society organizations.

Fellowship Objectives and Deliverables

The core aim of the fellowship is to build resilience among civil society actors by providing them with the tools, skills, and knowledge to combat and investigate digital threats. Participants are expected to:

  • Contribute to Research: Help identify new trends in spyware and digital surveillance tools.
  • Apply Digital Forensics: Conduct forensic investigations using advanced tools and techniques to support human rights defenders.
  • Enhance Digital Security: Work on building capacity for HRDs and journalists to better protect themselves against online threats.

What You Need to Qualify

To apply for the Digital Forensics Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Technical Understanding: Familiarity with digital threats, attacks, and challenges faced by journalists and HRDs, especially regarding surveillance and spyware.
  • Investigation Skills: A keen interest in conducting investigations to identify digital attacks.
  • Technical Competence: Experience with tools such as Bash and Python for basic scripting and data analysis, as well as knowledge of GNU/Linux, Android, and iPhone operating systems.
  • Understanding of Internet Infrastructure: Familiarity with IP addresses, TLS certificates, and DNS queries.
  • Language Proficiency: Ability to engage with the Fellowship in English, as it is the primary language of instruction.

    • Microsoft Teams Interview: Successful applicants will then be invited to a Microsoft Teams interview (week of 3rd March 2025).
