Background & Job Description
The Senior Mediation Adviser is part of the Standby Team (SBT) mechanism within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). Managed by UNOPS through its Development and Special Initiatives Portfolio, the SBT provides rapid, expert conflict resolution support to United Nations envoys, political and peacekeeping missions, regional organizations, and governments worldwide.
The mechanism was established in 2008 to enhance the UN’s ability to respond quickly to conflict situations with technical mediation support. The selected candidates will be expected to contribute high-level expertise in mediation, negotiation, and peacebuilding.
This role is remote-based and may require global travel on short notice. All advisers must be available for deployment and are prohibited from engaging in other employment while under full-time contract.
Tasks
Strategic Mediation Support
- Provide immediate and technical conflict resolution advice to UN missions, regional bodies, or country offices.
- Deliver strategic input to field-based UN actors on mediation processes and dialogue facilitation.
- Support high-level peace talks, ceasefire negotiations, or political transition processes.
Deployment and Engagement
- Remain on permanent standby for field deployment.
- Participate in short-term missions globally, depending on needs assessed by DPPA.
- Engage directly with national and local stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and political actors.
Thematic Expertise
Depending on the specialization of the selected adviser, responsibilities may also include:
- Constitution-making and legal reform.
- Gender and inclusive mediation processes.
- Natural resource conflict management.
- Transitional justice and reconciliation.
- National dialogues and ceasefire arrangements.
Knowledge Management and Capacity Building
- Support the development of knowledge tools and policy guidance through the UN Peacemaker platform.
- Train UN and partner staff in mediation techniques, negotiation frameworks, and inclusive peace processes.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in International Relations, Political Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, Law, or a related field.
- Relevant professional training or certification in mediation, negotiation, or conflict resolution is considered a plus.
Experience
- At least 15 years of progressively responsible experience in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, or international diplomacy.
- Extensive mediation or negotiation experience in complex political environments.
- Prior work with UN missions, regional organizations, or high-level negotiation processes is strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting senior UN officials or acting in advisory roles in fragile, conflict-affected areas.
- Strong familiarity with multilateral systems and the structure and functions of the UN.
Additional Information
Deployment Flexibility
- Senior Mediation Advisers must be permanently available for rapid deployment, typically for short-term missions (a few days to several weeks).
- Candidates unable to commit to full-time availability may also be considered for When-Actually-Employed (WAE) or part-time contracts.
Languages
- Fluency in English is required.
- Proficiency in additional UN languages—especially French, Arabic, or Spanish—is highly desirable.
Contract Terms
- Contract Type: International ICA (IICA-4 Level)
- Duty Station: Remote (Home-based)
- Duration: Open-ended, based on organizational needs, available funding, and performance.
- Full-time commitment is required during the term of the contract.
- Annual renewal subject to performance review and UNOPS/DPPA strategic priorities.

- Expertise areas within the SBT are reviewed annually.
- Contracts may be non-renewed based on changes in expertise needs or project continuity.
- The role does not permit external consulting, freelancing, or employment during the contract period.
