Job Overview

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual for the role of Associate Director, Development and Outreach in their Geneva office. This full-time position will focus on fundraising and organizing outreach events and initiatives in Geneva and other French-speaking regions of Switzerland. The successful candidate will report to the Geneva Director in HRW’s Development and Outreach Department and will be expected to work in a hybrid setting, spending 2-3 days per week in the Geneva office.


Key Responsibilities

  • Fundraising Strategy & Execution: Work with the Geneva Director to develop and implement a fundraising strategy for the Geneva office and French-speaking regions of Switzerland. Manage your own portfolio of donors, researching, identifying, and cultivating relationships to secure financial support for HRW.

  • Event Management: Lead the organization of HRW’s Geneva Voices for Justice Annual Dinner, ensuring smooth coordination, managing the project timeline, and developing speeches and materials. Oversee the auction process, including securing donations and managing the auctioneer.

  • Financial Oversight: Oversee the tracking of Annual Dinner income and expenses, maintaining and monitoring the department’s budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently.

  • Donor & Volunteer Engagement: Manage relationships with private and institutional major donors. Coordinate smaller fundraising and outreach events, such as film screenings, briefings, and field trips.

  • Committee Oversight: Support the strategic planning and management of the Committee and other sub-committees in Geneva, overseeing communications and initiatives in close partnership with the Senior Coordinator.

  • Gift Processing & Reporting: Supervise gift processing and donor support services in Salesforce, ensuring timely acknowledgment and tracking of donations. Maintain donor lists, fundraising reports, and event expenses.

  • Team Collaboration & DEI Initiatives: Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values in HRW’s work, coordinating with HRW’s DEI Office. Participate in the recruitment, training, and supervision of interns.

  • Additional Duties: Perform any other responsibilities as needed to support HRW’s mission.


Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, or equivalent work experience.

  • Experience: A minimum of 7 years of experience in donor management, philanthropy, or fundraising, with a demonstrated track record of successfully managing large-scale events.

  • Skills & Knowledge:

    • Strong experience in managing relationships with major donors (both private and institutional).

    • A deep commitment to human rights issues and the ability to represent HRW’s mission and programs.

    • Fluency in English and French (both written and spoken) is required.

    • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

    • Proven ability to multitask, work under pressure, and manage complex projects.

    • Experience with Salesforce, Constant Contact, and social media is highly desirable.
