Background:
Demographic and social data are vital for informed policymaking, economic planning, and societal progress. However, many countries in the Arab region face significant gaps in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating this data. The “Supporting the Enhancement and Modernization of Demographic and Social Statistics in the Arab States” project seeks to bridge these gaps by enhancing statistical systems and providing technical support to national statistical offices (NSOs). Through this project, trends in key demographic and social indicators will be monitored, and strategies will be developed to improve data availability and quality across the region.

Job Description:
As a Research Assistant, you will contribute to strengthening statistical systems in the Arab region by supporting the production and dissemination of high-quality demographic and social statistics. Your work will involve data processing, automation of databases, research, and statistical analysis to drive evidence-based policymaking.
Tasks
- Compile, process, and manipulate data sets from various sources.
- Update and automate the ESCWA database for streamlined data processing.
- Develop mechanisms to connect data sources with online databases.
- Prepare data sets, respond to queries, and draft research reports.
- Conduct assessments to identify data availability gaps and fill them.
- Perform estimation modeling and statistical analysis using tools such as R, Python, or STATA.
- Create data visualizations and support regional workshops on demographic and social issues.
- Manage and process data from censuses, surveys, and questionnaires.
- Perform additional tasks as required.

Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Demography, Population Studies, Economics, Business Analysis, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required.
- Candidates must submit a copy of their educational degree; incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Experience:
- No prior work experience is required for this position.
- Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills are essential.
- Proven ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines is necessary.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and programming languages like Python or R is desirable.
Additional Information
- Languages: Fluency in both Arabic and English is required. Fluency entails proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding all four areas.
- Work Location: This position is based at UN-House ESCWA in Beirut.
- Duration: The contract is for six months.
