Now more than ever, the movement to defend Africa’s oceans needs passionate leaders. Greenpeace Africa is looking for a dedicated and strategic Oceans Campaigner to join its Programmes Department and help steer the resistance against environmental degradation in West Africa’s coastal waters.

The Oceans Campaigner plays a critical role in Greenpeace Africa’s strategy to challenge ocean exploitation and environmental harm, particularly in the West African region. Based in Senegal, this role is more than a job — it’s a commitment to environmental justice.
You will be at the forefront of one of the most important battles of our time: protecting ocean ecosystems while supporting small-scale fishers, women fish processors, and local communities whose lives are intricately tied to healthy, sustainable seas.
Your work will span strategic planning, advocacy, direct action, litigation, media engagement, and community mobilisation. You’ll work closely with an array of stakeholders — from governments to grassroots organisations — ensuring that the campaign resonates across social, political, and ecological spheres.
📋 What You’ll Do: Your Main Responsibilities
The Oceans Campaigner is expected to lead with creativity, courage, and clarity. Here’s a breakdown of the key responsibilities you’ll take on:
🧭 1. Strategic Planning and Project Execution
You will design and execute campaign strategies that bring Greenpeace’s vision to life:

Develop and execute non-violent direct actions, public communications, legal interventions, and engagement activities aligned with the campaign’s theory of change.

Ensure every activity — whether a press briefing or community event — contributes meaningfully to wider campaign goals.

Collaborate with researchers and scientists to produce reports, litigation strategies, and high-impact submissionsthat elevate the campaign’s credibility and policy impact.

Take an active role in campaign strategic thinking, aligning with Greenpeace Africa’s integrated programme and fundraising strategies.

🌐 2. Lead Responsive and Agile Campaigning
Greenpeace campaigns must stay alert and adaptable. As Oceans Campaigner, you will:

Identify timely advocacy or legal opportunities, whether that’s a government hearing, a policy shift, or a breaking environmental incident.

Plan rapid-response actions and communications that align with the campaign’s long-term goals.

Influence both national and international practices, making sure African voices are heard in global oceans governance spaces.

🤝 3. Build and Strengthen External Networks
You will work hand in hand with external stakeholders, ensuring the campaign is grounded, inclusive, and far-reaching:

Forge strong relationships with civil society groups, local authorities, women-led cooperatives, fishing communities, lawyers, NGOs, and international bodies.

Represent Greenpeace Africa at community dialogues, government consultations, media engagements, and coordination meetings.

Facilitate collaboration with researchers, academic institutions, and community-based organisations to drive a united front for ocean protection.

At the heart of every Greenpeace campaign is a powerful message. You will:

Work with the Engagement Team to produce hard-hitting and culturally relevant campaign materials — from press releases to petitions, social media posts to protest banners.

Contribute to traditional and digital media campaigns, ensuring public messaging is clear, compelling, and aligned with campaign goals.

Craft briefings, reports, and real-time updates to inform the public, media houses, and policymakers about your campaign’s progress.

🗂️ 5. Campaign Administration & Monitoring
Even bold campaigns need strong systems. You’ll be responsible for:

Managing campaign budgets and activity logistics.

Producing timely reports and evaluations to measure the impact of campaign work.

Ensuring that monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) processes are embedded across all campaign stages, supporting a culture of continuous improvement.

🧑🏾💻 Qualifications & What You Bring to the Role
Greenpeace Africa is not looking for perfection — it’s looking for passion, purpose, and potential. That said, you’ll be most effective in this role if you have the following:
✅ Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (environmental science, policy, international relations, communications, or similar).

At least 3 years of campaigning or policy advocacy experience, ideally in ocean protection, marine policy, environmental law, or natural resource governance.
-
Previous work with an NGO or social movement is preferred.
-
Knowledge of ocean ecosystems, fisheries policy, or offshore oil exploration is a strong advantage.
Regional Awareness & Cultural Sensitivity

A Pan-African mindset, and comfort working across diverse cultures, communities, and legal systems.

An understanding of the intersectionality between environmental, gender, economic, and racial justice in African coastal contexts.
Language Skills

Fluency in French and English is essential.

Knowledge of a local language in Senegal or other West African coastal states is a significant asset.
