Background & Job Description

The opportunity is offered within the Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM), a research program under the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The foundation is a leading global nonprofit dedicated to fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world.

The IDM team works to support global health through computational modeling, policy analysis, and health system simulation. As part of their Gender, Vulnerability, and Health Equity team, you will help improve understanding and strategies surrounding maternal health data and mortality tracking in low-income countries.

This position is based in Seattle, WA and is full-time for a limited term of 11 months. Relocation assistance is not provided.

Tasks

As a Senior Research Scientist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and implementing quantitative research studies related to maternal and child health.
  • Developing statistical and predictive models to assess health system performance and maternal mortality outcomes.
  • Conducting simulation studies and analyses of data collection methods.
  • Leading initiatives focused on maternal newborn and child health (MNCH) modeling and data evaluation.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to address policy and programmatic questions related to maternal health and gender equity.
  • Translating complex research into accessible insights for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Sharing findings through academic publications, stakeholder presentations, and international collaboration.
  • Potential international travel for research and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Ph.D. in Statistics, Public Health, Demography, or a related quantitative field.
  • Coursework in quantitative methods such as data science, epidemiology, or health metrics.

Experience

  • Minimum five years of research experience in a related discipline.
  • Proven knowledge of mortality estimation, microsimulation modeling, and health data systems.
  • Deep familiarity with MNCH data sources like DHS, CRVS, or HMIS systems in low-income countries.
  • Strong communication skills to articulate complex findings to policymakers and diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with government agencies and international health partners.
  • Expertise in R programming and proficiency in tools like GitHub and cloud computing platforms.
  • A self-motivated approach with a demonstrated ability to manage independent and collaborative research projects.

Additional Information

  • This is an 11-month limited-term position.
  • The salary range is $186,400 to $288,800 USD, with higher ranges applicable in Seattle or Washington D.C.
