About the Role

Amnesty International’s East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) is looking for a Business and Human Rights Consultant to research, advocate, and support campaigns addressing human rights violations linked to cobalt and copper mining in Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This consultancy offers an exciting opportunity for professionals passionate about corporate accountability and human rights due diligence.

Key Responsibilities

1. Coordination and Capacity Support

  • Hold monthly meetings with Amnesty International’s Business and Human Rights (BHR) Team.
  • Provide quarterly updates to share progress with key stakeholders.
  • Develop training materials for local human rights defenders, journalists, and affected communities.
  • Organize two workshops on business and human rights for partners in Kolwezi.

2. Advocacy and Campaigning

  • Develop an actionable advocacy and campaign plan based on the 2023 Forced Evictions Report.
  • Facilitate two meetings between community representatives, government officials, and mining companies to discuss report recommendations.
  • Coordinate Amnesty International’s visits to Kolwezi and Kinshasa, arranging key stakeholder meetings.
  • Maintain records of all advocacy meetings, tracking engagement and outcomes.
  • Develop a database tracking progress and setbacks on corporate responsibility and government actions in response to the 2023 Forced Evictions Report.
  • Publish a public summary on the progress (or lack thereof) in implementing the 2023 Forced Evictions Report’s recommendations.

3. Monitoring Mining Policy Impacts

  • Maintain a database on mining sector policy reforms and their human rights impact in Kolwezi.
  • Track and document mining companies’ policies and practices affecting human rights.

4. Artisanal Mining Reform Analysis

  • Conduct an analysis of mining sector reforms since 2016, highlighting progress and challenges.

5. Scoping Future Research

  • Provide preliminary research findings to guide future investigations on mining and human rights.

Skills and Experience Required

Essential Qualifications

✔️ Human Rights Research & Advocacy Experience – Experience in research, advocacy, and campaigning in business and human rights. ✔️ Knowledge of Mining Sector & Corporate Accountability – Understanding of corporate due diligence, mining policy, and human rights issues in business. ✔️ Stakeholder Engagement – Ability to interact with government officials, corporate actors, and civil society groups. ✔️ Strong Research and Writing Skills – Experience conducting field research and writing policy briefings. ✔️ Fluency in English & French – Ability to read, write, and speak fluently in both languages. ✔️ Strong Communication Skills – Ability to build relationships and present findings to various audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

🔹 Experience working with affected communities, including human rights defenders and journalists. 🔹 Prior experience working in the Democratic Republic of Congo or similar contexts. 🔹 Knowledge of artisanal and small-scale mining sector reforms. 🔹 Experience with database management for tracking human rights progress.
