About Wahana Riset Indonesia (Young Scientists Incubator)

Wahana Riset Indonesia is an initiative by WRI Indonesia aimed at nurturing young researchers in environmental studies. This program, now in its third batch, provides an opportunity for young professionals to conduct research on environmental issues, contributing to science-based policy-making for sustainable development. Since 2017, this initiative has produced 11 scientific publications, 4 international conference presentations, 6 policy notes, and 2 books.

For 2025, the theme is “Reimagining Resilient Coastal Cities in Indonesia.” Selected researchers will collaborate to generate impactful research in one of six areas:

  1. Urban Coastal Climate Vulnerability and Resilience
  2. Coastal Livelihood and Food Security
  3. Sustainable Aquaculture/Marine Plastic Waste
  4. Air Pollution in Coastal Areas
  5. Climate Action (Adaptation and Mitigation) Planning & Implementation
  6. Urban Transport/Mobility

Research Focus

Indonesia’s coastal cities face increasing environmental risks due to climate change, rapid urbanization, and pollution. By 2050, 23 million Indonesians could be affected by rising sea levels. The program aims to explore how Indonesia’s coastal cities can enhance climate resilience.

Researchers will work within one of WRI Indonesia’s two research clusters to develop studies on pressing environmental issues, supporting WRI’s global vision for equitable, low-carbon, and climate-resilient urban development.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields (Urban Climate Resilience, Coastal Livelihood, Sustainable Aquaculture, Air Pollution, Climate Action, Urban Transport). A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of research experience and at least 2 years of formal work experience.
  • Skills:
    • Strong research background and willingness to explore new topics
    • Interest in environmental sustainability and resource management in Indonesia
    • Commitment to completing the research project (until December 31, 2025)
    • Proficiency in English & Indonesian (TOEFL: 550, IELTS: 6)
    • Understanding of research methodologies
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse teams
    • Based in Jakarta (or willing to relocate)
    • Legal authorization to work in Indonesia

Performance Expectations

  • Deliver research outputs on time and adhere to WRI standards
  • Uphold ethical research guidelines and maintain data confidentiality

Deliverables

  • Co-author a high-quality WRI knowledge product and/or journal article
  • Provide data analysis reports
  • Contribute to op-eds for domestic/international media

Contract & Compensation

  • Type: Individual Consultant (Part-time, limited term)
  • Payment: Daily rate-based (max. 18 working days per month)
