About the Role: Country Director – Kenya
As the Country Director (CD), you’ll serve as the strategic leader and public face of CARE Kenya. Your role is to ensure that CARE’s mission translates into high-impact, innovative, and inclusive programs. You’ll guide an ambitious country strategy, lead a talented team, and build powerful partnerships with government, donors, civil society, and the private sector.
This is a full-time leadership role based in Nairobi, with expected travel of up to 30%.
Key Responsibilities
Here’s what you’ll be doing:
1. Leadership & People Development

Inspire and manage a diverse, high-performing senior leadership team.

2. Strategic Planning & Resource Mobilization

3. Program Impact & Innovation

Ensure CARE Kenya delivers gender-sensitive, rights-based programs that address systemic poverty.

Integrate digital innovations and adaptive learning into programming.

Monitor program performance and drive continuous improvement.
4. External Engagement & Advocacy

Represent CARE at national and regional forums.

Build strategic alliances with stakeholders, from ministries to multilateral donors.

Champion advocacy efforts to shift policies and promote social justice.
5. Operational Excellence & Compliance

Oversee governance, risk management, compliance, and financial stewardship.

Ensure the safety, security, and ethical accountability of all operations.
What You Bring: Qualifications & Experience
This role demands a blend of visionary leadership, operational mastery, and deep contextual understanding.
✅ Required

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.

10+ years in senior leadership roles within international development or humanitarian work.

In-depth knowledge of the East African development landscape.

Track record of managing large, complex programs and budgets.

Demonstrated people leadership and capacity building skills.
-
Strong advocacy and partnership-building experience.
-
Fluency in English (Swahili is a strong asset).
🌟 Preferred

Master’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g., International Development, Public Policy).

Experience collaborating with the private sector to co-create innovative development solutions.

Ability to leverage digital tools for program efficiency and community engagement.

Proficiency in Swahili or other local languages is an advantage.

Required:

6–8 years of senior management experience in the development sector, including strategic and operational leadership.
