About the Legal Team
The Legal Division plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance and ethical operations across all foundation activities. This team collaborates closely with leadership and internal stakeholders to uphold the organization’s reputation while navigating legal complexities in an innovative and risk-conscious manner. Legal professionals at the Gates Foundation work on a broad spectrum of regulatory and compliance matters, emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), benefits, and employment law compliance.
Role Overview
As Deputy Director – Legal, Employment, you will report directly to the Director, Legal (People) and play a pivotal role in ensuring labor and employment compliance across the foundation and its affiliates. You will provide strategic legal counsel on U.S. employment law, covering all stages of the employment lifecycle while leading key initiatives related to DEI, benefits, and immigration.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal guidance on U.S. employment laws, including FMLA, ADA, Title VII, ADEA, FLSA, and EEOC regulations.
- Collaborate with HR teams to address recruitment, hiring, performance management, investigations, accommodations, and terminations.
- Develop and implement HR policies to ensure legal compliance and operational efficiency.
- Serve as a legal liaison for employment-related litigation matters in the U.S. and globally.
- Identify potential employment law risks and propose proactive solutions.
- Conduct training sessions for HR professionals and other internal stakeholders.
- Travel may be required as part of job responsibilities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Experience: 15-20 years in labor and employment law, preferably in-house, with a government agency, or in private practice.
- Expertise: Strong background in benefits, immigration law, and DEI initiatives.
- Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively with HR teams and senior leadership.
- Legal Acumen: Deep understanding of private foundation regulations is highly desirable.
- Work Authorization: Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.
Salary & Compensation
- Base Salary Range: $261,700 – $405,700 USD
- Seattle/Washington D.C. Market: $285,300 – $442,100 USD
- Salary placement depends on skills, experience, and expertise.
