Cultural Survival, an Indigenous-led nonprofit that has supported Indigenous Peoples’ rights and self-determination since 1972, is seeking a Director of Advocacy & Communications. This full-time, remote position offers a competitive salary of up to $132,000 USD, depending on experience and location.
As a key leadership role, the Director will unify and elevate the global advocacy and communications strategy of Cultural Survival. The successful candidate will join a multicultural team committed to Indigenous sovereignty, working across more than 70 countries to support community-led initiatives and amplify Indigenous voices.
This role is ideal for senior professionals with extensive experience in advocacy, communications, Indigenous rights, and nonprofit leadership, especially those adept at managing cross-cultural, multilingual teams.
Tasks
Strategic Vision and Organizational Leadership
- Serve on the executive leadership team to shape organization-wide priorities.
- Implement advocacy and communication strategies aligned with Indigenous rights and Cultural Survival’s mission.
- Provide visionary leadership that integrates global, regional, and local efforts.
Team Leadership and Cross-Department Integration
- Supervise managers of Communications, Indigenous Rights Radio, Advocacy, and Special Projects.
- Foster cohesion, collaboration, and capacity-building across remote, multicultural teams.
- Establish performance indicators and align departmental priorities with organizational goals.
External Representation and Advocacy
- Represent Cultural Survival at media events, global coalitions, advocacy platforms, and UN forums.
- Develop and sustain partnerships with Indigenous organizations, movements, and donors.
- Ensure Indigenous perspectives are prioritized in public narratives and campaigns.
Fundraising Support and Campaign Development
- Partner with development staff to align storytelling and campaigns with fundraising goals.
- Drive communications that reflect Indigenous-led priorities and increase donor engagement.
- Oversee the creation of media content for fundraising and public visibility.
Oversight of Communications and Media Outputs
- Lead editorial direction for Cultural Survival Quarterly and Indigenous Rights Radio.
- Guide strategic communications, public engagement, and digital content.
- Manage budgets for advocacy, communications, and special media projects.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Educational background in Indigenous studies, communications, law, or related fields is encouraged, though not required.
- Fluency in English and Spanish is mandatory.
- Fluency or proficiency in Indigenous languages, Portuguese, or French is highly desirable.
Experience
- Minimum of 7–10 years in communications, advocacy, or Indigenous rights, ideally in a senior leadership role.
- Proven success managing international, remote, and culturally diverse teams.
- In-depth knowledge of Indigenous governance systems, self-determination, and land rights.
- Familiarity with Indigenous rights instruments such as UNDRIP and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).
- Demonstrated capacity to influence policy, mobilize communities, and represent organizations internationally.

Cultural Survival provides regionally adjusted, equitable salaries that consider local cost of living and professional experience. Sample salary ranges include:
- United States: $100,000 – $132,000 USD
- Canada: $83,000 – $109,000 USD
- Mexico: $35,000 – $45,000 USD
- Brazil: $31,000 – $41,000 USD
- Germany: $71,000 – $94,000 USD
- Netherlands: $78,000 – $102,000 USD
- Thailand: $33,000 – $44,000 USD
- Australia: $89,000 – $117,000 USD
Salaries for other countries are similarly adjusted based on a transparent and equitable framework.
