Job Overview

The UNDP’s HIV and Health Group (HHG) focuses on reducing inequalities and promoting governance in health. As part of this initiative, the #WeBelongAfrica Programme (WBA) was established to support government accountability, policy reform, and inclusion for LGBTI and young key populations (YKPs).

UNDP is seeking two interns to support the WBA’s communication and programme management teams. This role will involve advocacy, research, event coordination, content creation, and social media management.

Key Responsibilities

Communications Intern Duties:

  • Develop and manage social media content, including infographics, GIFs, and videos.
  • Monitor trends and create engagement strategies to enhance WBA visibility.
  • Support publicity and marketing efforts for WBA publications and impact stories.
  • Prepare reports analyzing digital engagement and audience reach.
  • Assist in crafting speeches, presentations, and blog content for public advocacy.
  • Implement social media marketing strategies to boost online engagement and visibility.

Programme Intern Duties:

  • Assist with research and policy monitoring on LGBTI rights and key population inclusion across Africa.
  • Support the organization of conferences, workshops, and strategy meetings.
  • Engage with policymakers, NGOs, and influencers in the region.
  • Help track and report programme success metrics.
  • Provide administrative support to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Work on projects related to public policy, human rights, and governance.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for passionate, driven individuals with the following qualifications and skills:

Education:

  • Enrolled in a postgraduate or final-year undergraduate program.
  • Recent graduates (within one year of graduation) are also eligible.
  • Applicants in postgraduate professional traineeship programs may also apply.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong communication skills – ability to distill complex topics into engaging content.
  • Technical proficiency – competency in MS Office, social media platforms, and (preferably) Adobe Creative Suite/Canva.
  • Research & analytical skills – experience in policy monitoring and data analysis.
  • Multilingual abilities – fluency in English is required; additional fluency in French or Portuguese is a plus.
  • Understanding of LGBTI and key population issues in the African context is an advantage.
  • SEO and digital marketing knowledge – an added advantage for those handling social media tasks.
