The Overseas Interns Program offers students in global development, global health, and related fields an opportunity to gain international work experience while contributing to CARE’s mission of humanitarian assistance and international development. This program is designed to support the development of future leaders in the field through short-term, hands-on learning experiences.

Background & Job Description

CARE is a global leader in addressing poverty and social justice. The Overseas Interns Program is aimed at students who seek practical, real-world experience in international development, humanitarian response, and global health. The program offers exposure to CARE’s operations, networking opportunities, and professional development through training offered via CARE Academy.

Interns are assigned to CARE Country Offices, where they will participate in on-the-job training assignments, receive coaching, and engage in formal training to build management and leadership skills. The program is designed to foster learning and skill development through a combination of fieldwork, mentorship, and structured educational support.


Tasks

  • Assist with project planning, implementation, and evaluation in CARE’s field operations.
  • Conduct research, data analysis, and support program reporting and documentation.
  • Participate in meetings, field visits, and community engagement activities.
  • Collaborate with local teams to support project activities and provide insights into program effectiveness.
  • Complete formal training modules and attend coaching sessions for professional development.
  • Contribute to the development of materials for public relations and fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate or post-graduate program relevant to CARE’s work (global development, global health, international relations, etc.).

Experience

  • At least 2 years of professional work experience in a related field is ideal.
  • Proficiency in English; additional languages such as French, Spanish, or Portuguese are advantageous.

Skills

  • Strong time management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  • Ability to work in diverse, multicultural environments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant software tools.

Additional Information

  • Duration: Internships typically occur between June and August, but placements may happen throughout the year.
  • Eligibility: Interns must be legally authorized to work in the assigned location and must provide a letter of permission if partially or fully sponsored by an academic institution.
  • Visa and Insurance: Interns must obtain an appropriate visa and provide proof of comprehensive medical and evacuation insurance for the duration of the internship.
  • Safety & Security: Interns must complete an online safety and security course and receive a security briefing upon arrival at their assignment location.
