Gender at Work (G@W), a leading global organization focused on advancing gender equality and inclusion in institutions and development settings, has announced the Early Career Consultants Training Program for 2025. This unique opportunity is targeted at early-career professionals residing in Africa who have academic or professional experience in gender, inclusion, and disability and are eager to deepen their expertise in transformative organizational change.

Over the past two decades, Gender at Work has supported more than 100 organizations across the globe to transform internal practices and external outcomes through inclusive learning, reflection, and practical change strategies. This new training program reflects the next chapter in G@W’s commitment to building a new generation of African gender consultants capable of working at the intersection of gender, artificial intelligence (AI), disability, and organizational development.

The 16-month program is set to begin in August 2025 and is being implemented in partnership with Ladysmith, a feminist research organization. The program is tied to Ladysmith and Gender at Work’s ongoing support for research teams under the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) program, jointly funded by IDRC and the UK’s FCDO.

This is a remote (online-first) training opportunity with possible in-person engagements. Three candidates will be selected, each of whom will receive a stipend of CAD 3,200 over the course of the program.

Tasks

The Early Career Consultants Training Program is not a full-time job but a part-time structured learning experience spread out across 16 months, requiring about 8 days per year of active engagement in program activities. The program is built around three interconnected threads:

1. Experiential Learning Through Mentorship

  • Interns will shadow experienced G@W consultants as they support gender equality and inclusion work with various AI research teams across Africa.
  • Activities include note-taking, contributing to planning sessions, offering feedback, and participating in design or facilitation when appropriate.

2. Knowledge Building through Reading and Critical Engagement

  • Fellows will read and reflect on selected literature related to gender equality, disability inclusion, AI, and learning and change frameworks.
  • This includes feminist theories of organizational transformation, inclusive development practices, and critical perspectives on tech-enabled solutions.

3. Group Reflection and Dialogue

  • Participants will be part of a regular virtual reflection group facilitated by a senior G@W associate.
  • This space will support critical thinking, mentorship, peer learning, and ongoing dialogue about how participants are applying lessons learned in practical contexts.

This combination of action, study, and dialogue is designed to build competence, confidence, and ethical depth in early-career consultants committed to inclusive development.


Qualifications

Education and Certification

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be an early-career consultant or practitioner in gender, disability, inclusion, or a related field.
  • Have formal education, training, or equivalent experience in areas like:
    • Gender and development
    • Disability inclusion
    • Intersectionality
    • Human rights
    • Sociology or related social sciences
  • Be residing in Africa for the duration of the program.
  • Have strong English language skills (written and verbal). French language skills are desirable but not mandatory.

Experience

Ideal candidates will also bring the following skills and qualities:

  • Experience as a facilitator in organizational, educational, or community settings.
  • Interest in AI, data science, or digital development, even if prior technical experience is limited.
  • Demonstrated openness to learning, self-reflection, and critical thinking.
  • Comfort working in diverse, cross-cultural teams.
  • A commitment to feminist values and inclusive practices.

No prior work with artificial intelligence or machine learning is required, but a curiosity to learn about technology’s role in development is essential.
