Background & Job Description
The ILO Administrative Tribunal is the principal judicial body that resolves employment disputes within international organizations applying the ILO’s legal framework. The Tribunal is supported by a small and highly specialized Registry, including a Registrar and legal officers.
The Junior Legal Officer will be embedded in this legal structure, offering critical support in the preparation of cases and research of precedent. Working under the supervision of the Registrar, the selected candidate will interact directly with Tribunal Judges, support Tribunal sessions, and engage in legal research that influences international administrative jurisprudence.
This job falls under technical cooperation appointments, meaning it is not part of the ILO’s regular career serviceand comes without the expectation of renewal or conversion.
Tasks
Draft Legal Summaries and Jurisprudence Notes
- Create detailed summaries of case submissions in English and French.
- Use legal research tools including dtSearch and the Triblex database.
- Integrate relevant case law references for use in Tribunal decisions.
Conduct Legal Research and Studies
- Perform legal analysis related to international administrative law and its practical application.
- Research issues pertaining to public international law and European Union law.
Support Tribunal Sessions
- Assist Judges and the Registrar by preparing documents and background materials.
- Help during judicial deliberations.
- Finalize judgment documents post-session for administrative processing.
Participate in Internal Legal Collaboration
- Attend meetings of legal officers in the Registry.
- Contribute to legal discussions and collective research projects.
Maintain the Tribunal’s Legal Database
- Support the updating and accuracy of the Triblex case law database.
- Ensure documents and legal references are stored and categorized correctly.
Additional Duties
- Carry out supplementary legal tasks as assigned by the Registrar.
This role is both academic and practical, offering hands-on exposure to the inner workings of a respected international tribunal.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Required: A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in Law.
- Preferred: An advanced Master’s degree in Law with specialization in public international law or international administrative law.
Experience
While this is a P1-level entry position, candidates with the following backgrounds will have an advantage:
- Experience or internship within an international judicial institution, tribunal, or legal office.
- Familiarity with the internal justice systems of international organizations.
- Academic or professional background in Public International Law, International Administrative Law, or EU Law.
- Strong capabilities in legal analysis, legal writing, and procedural documentation.
Languages
- Excellent command of English and French is mandatory, as these are the two working languages of the Tribunal.
- Knowledge of another official ILO language (such as Spanish or Arabic) is beneficial.
