IRC Hiring: Program Director – Lead Global Humanitarian Programs | Apply Today. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a Program Director to provide strategic leadership for its humanitarian operations in Port Sudan, Sudan. This is a full-time, in-person position that involves overseeing program development and delivery in one of the world’s most complex and devastating humanitarian crises.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global humanitarian organization dedicated to helping people affected by conflict and disaster. Operating in over 40 countries, the IRC provides a wide range of services to help individuals survive and rebuild their communities. Sudan is currently at the top of the IRC’s watchlist, with a crisis that has displaced over 12 million people and left millions more in urgent need of assistance.

The Program Director is a pivotal senior leadership role within the IRC Sudan country program. Reporting directly to the Country Director, you will be responsible for the strategic direction, growth, and effective implementation of all of IRC’s programs. This role is for a highly experienced and solutions-driven professional who can lead a diverse, multi-disciplinary team while navigating a rapidly changing context. You will ensure all programs are evidence-based, needs-driven, and funded appropriately.

As a key member of the management team, you will not only lead program delivery but also actively represent the IRC to donors, government officials, and other partners, championing the organization’s mission to restore safety, dignity, and hope.


Key Responsibilities

As the Program Director, your duties will span strategic leadership, program quality, business development, and staff management. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Leadership and Representation: Provide overall leadership for IRC Sudan’s programs, leading the development and implementation of the country’s Strategic Action Plan (SAP). You will actively represent the IRC to donors, government authorities, and other key partners.
  • Business Development and Program Design: Remain up-to-date on contextual and funding trends, leading the development of innovative funding proposals. You will ensure the highest level of quality in program design through in-depth analysis and the use of evidence-based strategies.
  • Program Quality and Delivery: Oversee the effective implementation of a wide range of programs. You will ensure programs are aligned with IRC’s best practices, with a focus on rigorous monitoring and evaluation, and actively champion a culture where data and client feedback are used for decision-making.
  • Staff Performance Management and Development: Supervise and mentor a multi-disciplinary team, setting clear expectations and providing regular feedback. You will also promote staff care and well-being in a high-stress environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

This is a demanding role that requires a senior professional with a proven track record of managing complex humanitarian operations.

  • Education: A graduate degree in Psychology, social work, human rights, or a related field is preferred.
  • Professional Experience: You must have at least 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience managing complex humanitarian and development programs.
  • Leadership & Management Skills: Demonstrated successful experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and a keen understanding of political complexities. Superior diplomatic and coordination skills are essential.
  • Contextual & Fundraising Experience: Experience managing programs in a rapidly changing environment is critical. You must have extensive fundraising success, including prior experience with European, US, and international donors.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in spoken and written English is required, and a working knowledge of Arabic is a valuable asset.
