This position plays a key role in data analytics and business intelligence to support evidence-based decisions across UNEP. You will be based at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, contributing to UNEPβs global impact through advanced data strategies.
π Key Responsibilities
As a Data Specialist, you will:

Contribute to the development and evaluation of data analytics projects, particularly around Umoja Analytics (SAP Self Service Analytics) and Business Intelligence (BI).

Support the development of UNEPβs Enterprise Data Warehouse, identifying improvement opportunities in data analysis processes.

Select appropriate data sources for analytics projects and ensure collaboration with data engineers and scientists to enhance data flows and quality.

Design and implement databases, collection systems, and strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and data integrity.

Use machine learning techniques, statistical models, and trend analysis to extract insights from structured and unstructured datasets.

Develop organizational dashboards, reports, and secure APIs to enable cross-functional data consumption.

Ensure high-quality data services through testing, documentation, and continuous improvement.

Perform additional duties as assigned in support of UNEPβs analytical needs.

π Education Requirements

Advanced university degree (Masterβs or equivalent) in computer science, data science, IT, analytics, information management, or related fields.

A first-level degree plus two additional years of experience may substitute for an advanced degree.
π§Ύ Required Experience
You must have at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in:

Applied analytics, business intelligence, or information management.
-
Using data to inform strategies and decision-making.
-
Self-service analytics and data visualization tools (e.g., PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau, or SAP Business Objects).

Programming with SQL, Python, or R.
Desirable experience includes:

Using version control tools like Git.
-
Designing and managing enterprise data warehouses.

Software development using ASP.NET, PHP, C#, Java, or React.

English: Fluency is required in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding.

Other UN languages: Knowledge is desirable.
