This position plays a key role in data analytics and business intelligence to support evidence-based decisions across UNEP. You will be based at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, contributing to UNEP’s global impact through advanced data strategies.


πŸ“Œ Key Responsibilities

As a Data Specialist, you will:

  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of data analytics projects, particularly around Umoja Analytics (SAP Self Service Analytics) and Business Intelligence (BI).

  • Support the development of UNEP’s Enterprise Data Warehouse, identifying improvement opportunities in data analysis processes.

  • Select appropriate data sources for analytics projects and ensure collaboration with data engineers and scientists to enhance data flows and quality.

  • Design and implement databases, collection systems, and strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and data integrity.

  • Use machine learning techniques, statistical models, and trend analysis to extract insights from structured and unstructured datasets.

  • Develop organizational dashboards, reports, and secure APIs to enable cross-functional data consumption.

  • Ensure high-quality data services through testing, documentation, and continuous improvement.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of UNEP’s analytical needs.

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in computer science, data science, IT, analytics, information management, or related fields.

  • A first-level degree plus two additional years of experience may substitute for an advanced degree.


🧾 Required Experience

You must have at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in:

  • Applied analytics, business intelligence, or information management.

  • Using data to inform strategies and decision-making.

  • Self-service analytics and data visualization tools (e.g., PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau, or SAP Business Objects).

  • Programming with SQL, Python, or R.

Desirable experience includes:

  • Using version control tools like Git.

  • Designing and managing enterprise data warehouses.

  • Software development using ASP.NET, PHP, C#, Java, or React.


🌐 Language Requirements

  • English: Fluency is required in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding.

  • Other UN languages: Knowledge is desirable.
