Position Overview:

The International Budget Partnership (IBP) is seeking a Fundraising Director to lead and drive the organization’s resource development and financial sustainability efforts. This senior executive position is crucial for securing multi-million-dollar commitments from international donors and establishing innovative and comprehensive fundraising strategies to support IBP’s mission globally.

As the Fundraising Director, you will oversee the development of a sustainable, multi-year fundraising strategy that aligns with the organization’s global goals. You will be tasked with securing high-value grants and donations from key stakeholders such as foundations, governments, and high-net-worth individuals. You will also provide leadership for a growing fundraising team, helping to shape IBP’s financial future while advancing its mission of promoting budget transparency and accountability.

This role is pivotal in IBP’s work to improve public finance management worldwide. By increasing transparency and public participation in budgeting processes, IBP’s work ensures governments raise and spend public resources more equitably to benefit everyone. Key Responsibilities:

The Fundraising Director will be expected to undertake a wide range of responsibilities, including:

1. Fundraising Strategy Development & Execution (50%)

  • Setting Fundraising Strategy and Vision: Lead the creation of a data-driven fundraising strategy aligned with IBP’s long-term organizational goals. Define ambitious, achievable financial targets that meet the growing needs of the organization.
  • Prospecting for Donors: Design and implement innovative strategies to identify, approach, and cultivate institutional funders, individual donors, and other strategic partners.
  • Proposal Development: Lead the creation of compelling funding proposals, ensuring that they align with the needs of donors and IBP’s strategic objectives. Collaborate with initiative managers to craft tailored fundraising pitches.
  • Building and Maintaining Networks: Develop relationships with key stakeholders, including high-net-worth individuals, government agencies, bilateral donors, foundations, and philanthropic organizations. Cultivate and sustain strong, long-term relationships with these stakeholders.
  • Innovative Fundraising Strategies: Explore and introduce new approaches to fundraising, including joint fundraising with strategic partners, sector-based fundraising strategies, and innovative fundraising channels. Strengthen fundraising capacity at local, regional, and global levels.

2. Donor Stewardship & Engagement (25%)

  • Donor Lifecycle Management: Manage the entire donor lifecycle, from acquisition and engagement to cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Develop personalized engagement strategies to build and sustain long-term donor relationships.
  • Board Engagement: Work closely with IBP’s Board of Directors and Advisory Council to ensure their active involvement in fundraising efforts. Provide regular updates, and engage them in high-level donor meetings and stewardship activities.
  • Crisis and Risk Management: Develop risk management strategies to address potential economic downturns, donor withdrawals, or reputational risks. Implement mitigation plans to safeguard IBP’s financial stability.
  • Engagement Strategies: Collaborate with program teams to design tailored donor engagement strategies. Provide donors with personalized reports, impact updates, and briefings to maintain their interest and engagement with IBP’s mission.

3. Direct and Indirect Team Management (25%)

  • Resource Allocation and Budgeting: Oversee the fundraising budget to ensure optimal resource allocation for high-impact fundraising activities. Collaborate with the Director of Finance to ensure proper handling, reporting, and forecasting of donor funds.
  • Team Building and Development: Recruit, train, and retain a high-performing fundraising team. Set clear performance metrics and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Performance Management and Reporting: Track and report fundraising performance metrics, using data analytics to optimize results. Present fundraising updates to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Developing Internal Talent: Mentor program staff and other stakeholders involved in fundraising. Strengthen organizational capacity by equipping team members with the knowledge and skills needed to engage donors and support fundraising activities.

Requirements:

We are seeking individuals who not only possess the necessary skills and competencies but also align with IBP’s core values of transparency, accountability, and equity. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience: At least 10 years of experience in fundraising, with a proven track record of securing large-scale donations from trusts, foundations, governments, and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Education: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and manage fundraising teams, with strong coaching and mentoring abilities.
  • Donor Relationship Management: Proven success in managing donor relationships from acquisition to stewardship and retention.
  • Global Perspective: Experience in engaging with Global South philanthropic organizations and knowledge of funding trends in emerging markets.
  • Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic thinker with the ability to execute detailed plans and meet ambitious fundraising goals.
  • Commitment to Social Impact: Passion for human rights, social justice, democracy, and equitable access to resources.
