CARE USA is seeking a Manager, Donor Communications and Engagement to strengthen relationships with major donors through strategic storytelling, targeted communications, and personalized stewardship initiatives. This position is central to CARE’s mission to build deep, meaningful connections with its most committed supporters—those who fund vital global humanitarian programs.
This full-time role is part of CARE’s Major Gifts department and reports directly to fundraising leadership. It offers the flexibility of working remotely from anywhere in the U.S. or being based in New York City, with up to 20% travel required.

Tasks
Donor Communications
The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping and executing a comprehensive communications strategy aimed at engaging high-net-worth individuals. Key duties include:
- Sourcing impactful stories and updates from CARE’s programs worldwide to create emotionally compelling content tailored for major donors.
- Producing personalized communication materials, including reports, newsletters, invitations, and donor updates.
- Managing an annual content calendar that aligns with CARE’s fundraising priorities, seasonal campaigns, and emergency appeals.
- Translating complex programmatic data into clear, relatable messaging for a philanthropic audience.
- Monitoring humanitarian issues and global events to proactively identify timely engagement opportunities for donor outreach.
Campaign and Calendar Management
- Leading the coordination of major gift campaigns and crisis communications to ensure rapid donor response.
- Managing timelines for donor communications and ensuring content is delivered on schedule.
- Aligning donor stewardship touchpoints with global milestones, such as International Women’s Day or emergency responses.
Team Collaboration
This role will involve significant cross-departmental collaboration:
- Working with Marketing, Events, Programs, and the Office of the President to identify opportunities for donor engagement.
- Partnering with Grants Management and Content teams to develop compelling impact reports and informational materials.
- Serving as the point of contact for internal stakeholders requiring support with donor materials or content.
Content Innovation
- Designing and executing bespoke engagement strategies to make donors feel personally connected to CARE’s work.
- Curating creative experiences such as digital packages, photo stories, and video testimonials to bring CARE’s mission to life.
- Supporting live donor events, virtual town halls, and executive briefings with customized content.
Internal Systems and Resource Management
- Maintaining an organized library of impact stories, visuals, statistics, and content templates.
- Tracking donor communications through CRM systems to ensure consistent engagement.
- Assisting with ad hoc content requests and participating in innovation projects to pilot new formats for donor engagement.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, nonprofit management, journalism, marketing, or a related field is required.
- Equivalent experience in place of formal education may be considered for candidates with a strong track record in donor communications or nonprofit engagement.
- While not mandatory, certifications such as CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive), digital marketing credentials, or nonprofit communication training are advantageous.
Experience
- At least 3 years of professional experience in strategic communications, donor engagement, or major gifts stewardship in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
- Proven ability to develop persuasive, donor-facing content that communicates impact effectively.
- Experience working with high-net-worth individuals or family philanthropists is preferred.
- Track record of managing communications in fast-paced environments, balancing multiple deadlines and deliverables.
- Familiarity with CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce), content management platforms, and mass email tools (e.g., Mailchimp or Constant Contact) is highly beneficial.
- A portfolio of storytelling work aimed at donors is considered an asset.

Work Location
This role is open to candidates based anywhere in the United States, including remote applicants. Candidates may also opt to work from CARE’s New York City headquarters. Occasional travel (up to 20%) is expected to attend strategy sessions, donor events, or program briefings.
