Background & Job Description
The WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) is seeking a highly qualified Consultant to coordinate, monitor, and ensure the quality of language services—including translation and interpretation—in support of its Governing Bodies meetings and other high-level events. The consultancy will run from July 2025 to June 2026 and is based on-site in Manila, Philippines.
As part of the Director, Programme Management (DPM) unit, the selected consultant will play a crucial role in managing multilingual workflows, ensuring the quality of translated content, advising technical units, and coordinating freelance translators and interpreters. The role will also support documentation review, reference system updates, and quality assurance innovations, especially in English and French languages.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to multilingual communication strategies at the highest levels of international health diplomacy while collaborating with global stakeholders in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
Tasks
The consultant will deliver on three primary areas, with associated deliverables:
Output 1: Language Service Coordination for High-Level Events
- Coordinate timely delivery of translation and interpretation for Governing Bodies and Regional Committee meetings
- Advise on translation needs in Chinese, English, and French
- Ensure quality control and proofreading of English information products
- Prepare costed work plans and coordinate translation logistics
- Manage translation requests and workflows
- Monitor use of eLUNa machine translation for official document production
Output 2: Documentation and Correspondence Management
- Draft and proofread correspondence and reports in English and French
- Maintain document accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance with WHO editorial standards
- Ensure timely updates of reference files, freelancer databases, and shared language resources
Output 3: Quality Assurance and Innovation
- Provide technical guidance to language contractors and conference staff
- Monitor contractor performance and report issues to the Technical Lead
- Recommend adoption of digital tools and translation technologies for improved efficiency
Qualifications
Education and Certification
Required:
- First-level university degree in linguistics, business administration, or a related field
- Formal training in language-related studies
Experience
Required:
- Minimum three years of professional experience in translation and language services (English and French)
- Experience in executive coordination, office management, and strategic communication within complex organizations
Desirable:
- Experience working within WHO, UN agencies, or other international organizations
- Familiarity with multilingual governance processes and conference language logistics
Skills and Competencies
- Bilingual fluency in English and French
- Excellent computer literacy, including MS Office and digital workflow tools
- Strong organizational and documentation management skills
- Attention to detail with excellent editorial and proofreading abilities
- Ability to produce high-quality reports, memos, and communication materials
- Familiarity with UN translation standards, formats, and policies (preferred)
