Internship Opportunity: Programme and Communication Support (2 Positions)

Background & Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), through its Ecosystems Division, is seeking interns to support the implementation of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030). This global initiative addresses environmental degradation, promoting partnerships, policy development, and restoration efforts.

Internships are full-time (5 days/week), unpaid, and supervised by UNEP staff in Nairobi, Kenya, or remotely. The internship offers two focus areas: Programme and Partnerships Support or Communications Support.

Tasks

Interns will contribute under one of the following tracks:

A. Programme and Partnerships Support

  • Develop and manage partnerships for the UN Decade, including due diligence and toolkit creation.
  • Coordinate internal/external meetings and outreach events, preparing materials and reports.
  • Manage official correspondence and oversee the UN Decade’s email platform.
  • Support the Multi-Partner Trust Fund Secretariat.

B. Communications Support

  • Maintain and quality-check the UN Decade’s website.
  • Compile and distribute the monthly newsletter.
  • Coordinate translation needs for communication materials.

Both roles require administrative support, project coordination, and participation in flagship activities and advisory board efforts.

Qualifications Remote and Paid UNEP Internship

Education

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program in Environmental Sciences, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations, or related fields.

Experience

  • No prior professional experience required, but applicants should demonstrate relevant academic focus or skills.

Skills

  • Proficiency in standard software (MS Teams, Outlook).
  • Strong report-writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in another UN language is desirable.

Additional Information

  • Location: Nairobi or remote.
  • Duration: 6 months.
  • Financials: Internship is unpaid, and participants must cover their travel, living, and visa expenses.
  • Competencies: Communication, client orientation, and teamwork are key.
