The Council of Women World Leaders is a pioneering network of current and former women Prime Ministers and Presidents, founded in 1996 by Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, Mary Robinson, and Laura Liswood. With a membership of 91 women leaders, the Council is the only organization globally dedicated to women heads of state and government. Its mission is to promote good governance, gender equality, and visibility for women leaders worldwide.
The Council’s Secretariat, hosted by the United Nations Foundation in Washington, D.C., is seeking a Communications and Social Media Intern to support its mission through strategic content creation, social media management, event coordination, and database upkeep. This remote internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to advancing women’s leadership on a global scale.

Remote Social Media Intern
Tasks
Content Creation and Management
- Develop and manage a content calendar for the Council’s social media accounts (Instagram, LinkedIn, and X).
- Create engaging posts and maintain active interaction on social platforms.
Performance Reporting
- Track and report social media performance metrics, audience insights, and engagement trends.
Website Maintenance
- Update and enhance the visual appeal of the Council’s website.
- Ensure timely updates reflecting events and member engagement.
Newsletter Management
- Maintain and update the Council’s quarterly newsletter.
Event Coordination
- Draft invitations and manage logistics for Council events.
Database Management
- Maintain and update membership contact databases.
Research and Outreach
- Monitor global elections to identify newly elected women heads of state or government.
- Track Council members’ activity and update related databases and website content.
- Conduct research to identify speaking opportunities for Council members.
- Organize and manage monthly Council meetings, including agenda preparation and execution.
Ad-Hoc Responsibilities
- Undertake additional tasks as needed to support the Council’s operations.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Enrollment in a degree-granting program is required during the internship.
Experience
- Proven experience managing social media platforms and creating engaging content.
- Experience in tracking and analyzing social media metrics to boost engagement.
- Proficiency in design tools like Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or equivalent software.
- Experience with website design and maintenance is advantageous.
- Background in communications, social media, or non-profit work is a plus.
Additional Skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Independence and the ability to take initiative and ownership of tasks.
- Proficiency in managing multiple tasks under pressure.
- Familiarity with Eastern work hours and ability to commit to a maximum of 29 hours per week.
- Access to a personal laptop or computer with internet connectivity.
- Authorization to work in the United States is mandatory.
