Background & Job Description

The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking a qualified Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Consultant to support its Health Information Unit. The role involves managing GIS systems, developing tools for spatial data analysis, coordinating field data collection, and generating cartographic products. The consultant will play a crucial role in mapping out operational challenges and informing strategic decisions.

The consultancy begins on July 1, 2025, and runs until December 31, 2025. It is a full-time position, based in-person.

This contract aims to support WHO’s mission in helping countries prepare for and respond to public health emergencies through improved data and geospatial insights.

Tasks

GIS System Management

  • Develop and standardize spatial data tools
  • Perform geospatial analysis and produce regular cartographic outputs
  • Clean and standardize geospatial datasets and associated attributes

Field Data Coordination

  • Lead field data collection using mobile and digital platforms
  • Design tools for GIS data transfer and storage
  • Build scripts to convert GIS data between various formats
  • Merge diverse GIS datasets to extract new insights and projections

Strategic Mapping and Visualization

  • Support incident management with technical GIS solutions
  • Create infographics, maps, and dashboards tailored for health partners

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in geography, cartography, GIS, information management, geomatics, engineering, computer science, or earth sciences
  • Postgraduate coursework in GIS is desirable

Experience

  • 5 to 6 years of relevant GIS experience at national or international levels
  • Demonstrated ability with software such as QGIS, ArcGIS Online, or other open-source platforms
  • Experience in field data collection within humanitarian or emergency settings
  • Advanced data management experience with formats like shapefile, geodatabase, CSV, and XLS
  • Prior work in project-based GIS design, analysis, and web tools is a plus
