Position Overview
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Senior Researcher to lead human rights investigations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Africa Division works to promote human rights across the continent through investigations, advocacy, and partnerships. This position, based in Kinshasa with frequent travel to Goma, will focus on researching and advocating for human rights conditions in the DRC. The Senior Researcher will report to an Associate Director in the Africa Division.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research and document human rights violations in the DRC, gathering information from governments, local media, NGOs, and other sources.
- Produce reports, briefings, letters, and press releases to share findings and policy recommendations.
- Analyze political and human rights trends to identify underlying factors contributing to abuses.
- Generate public debate around human rights issues and advocate for tangible actions against violators.
- Engage with media, government officials, and international stakeholders to advocate for human rights improvements.
- Use multimedia and social media to communicate HRW’s positions and advocacy goals effectively.
- Contribute to HRW’s internal policy debates and assist in developing advocacy strategies.
- Work with local and international organizations to enhance the effectiveness of HRW’s initiatives.
- Lead and mentor junior researchers and assistants, managing workloads, providing feedback, and supporting professional growth.
- Assist in HRW’s fundraising efforts and deliver outputs on time.
- Remain flexible, willing to work irregular hours and adjust to urgent situations.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, law, or related fields; an advanced degree is desirable.
- Experience: Minimum of seven years of experience in human rights, media, or a related field, including field research in the DRC.
- Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong strategic thinking and advocacy abilities.
- In-depth understanding of DRC’s human rights and political landscape.
- Proven skills in media engagement and public speaking.
- Proficiency in English and French, both oral and written.
- Ability to produce clear, analytical, and persuasive reports.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure and work collaboratively in diverse environments.
- Supervisory experience and capacity to create a positive, inclusive work environment.
- Understanding of the stresses related to defending human rights and promoting resilience.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is USD 79,500 – 85,000, with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance.

Responsibilities
