About the Young Leaders for the SDGs

The Young Leaders for the SDGs program is a flagship initiative under the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth. Every two years, 17 exceptional young leaders are selected from across the globe to work with the United Nations (UN) and its partners. These Young Leaders act as champions, helping to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development while inspiring others to take action.

From tackling climate change to promoting gender equality, from revolutionizing education to advocating for human rights, the Young Leaders come from diverse backgrounds but share a common goal: a more just, sustainable, and inclusive world.

What Young Leaders Do

As part of their two-year term (2025-2027), Young Leaders will:

• Champion the SDGs through advocacy, storytelling, and strategic collaborations, making them more accessible and relatable to young people worldwide.
• Engage in global conversations, participating in UN and international events to elevate youth perspectives on sustainable development.
• Inspire and mobilize communities using innovative approaches to drive action toward the Goals.
• Collaborate with the UN and its partners, contributing to key initiatives and global moments related to youth and the SDGs.
• Uphold UN values, demonstrating integrity, leadership, and accountability in all engagements.

Young Leaders Through the Years

The Young Leaders initiative was first launched in September 2016. Since then, multiple cohorts have been selected, each contributing uniquely to advancing the SDGs.

Each cohort has brought together inspiring individuals whose work has transformed communities and policies worldwide. From innovative climate solutions to groundbreaking educational programs, these young leaders continue to shape the future.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Criteria

We are looking for young visionaries and changemakers from all walks of life. Here are the basic eligibility requirements:

• Age at the time of application: 15-35 years old
• Working-level proficiency in English
• Passion for and experience in advancing one or more SDGs
• Demonstrated leadership, innovation, and impact in your field

We strongly encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including young women and girls, youth with disabilities, indigenous youth, LGBTIQ+ youth, refugees and migrants, and rural youth.
