Background & Job Description

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Multi-Country Office in Panama City is seeking a qualified Senior Communications Assistant (GS5) to join their communications team. This role is crucial in advancing UNHCR’s visibility and impact across Panama, Belize, Nicaragua, and the Eastern and Southern Caribbean.

Working under the supervision of the Senior Communication Associate, the position focuses on digital storytelling through photography and video production, enhancing UNHCR’s regional narrative on displacement, climate impact, and statelessness.

This is a national position open to Panamanian nationals or residents with a valid work permit.


Tasks

  • Produce high-quality photography and video content for social media, Help Pages, and chatbot interfaces
  • Manage UNHCR’s photo and video archives, ensuring accessibility and compliance
  • Support press briefings, internal events, and digital campaigns
  • Contribute to the drafting of articles, website content, and public awareness materials
  • Distribute press materials and manage daily news clippings
  • Develop SOPs for multimedia content use and lead training sessions for team members
  • Maintain administrative databases and the appointments diary
  • Liaise with media and printers, and support routine correspondence

Qualifications

Education & Skills

  • High school diploma + 2 years relevant experience OR
    Bachelor’s degree + 1 year of experience in Communications, Digital Media, Journalism, or related field
  • Proficiency in photo/video editing software: Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom
  • Strong skills in digital storytelling, archiving, and social media tools
  • Experience using CMS and digital asset management platforms

Experience

  • Prior work in digital content production (photography and videography)
  • Background in communications within refugee contexts or the UN system
  • Familiarity with managing digital communication channels and developing SOPs

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Spanish is mandatory
  • Working knowledge of French and/or Dutch is desirable

Additional Information

  • Grade: GS5 (General Service category)
  • Location: Panama City, Panama (family duty station)
  • Contract type: Fixed-term, 1 year (renewable based on performance and budget)
  • Start date: 1 September 2025
