Background & Job Description

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), through its Water, Environment, and Climate (WEC) portfolio, is offering an 8-month Climate Change Transparency Monitoring and Evaluation Internship under the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT). This position will be based at the UNOPS office in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the possibility of extension for up to 12 months.

ICAT is a global initiative that assists over 50 developing countries in building strong, transparent climate action frameworks aligned with the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative empowers nations to track their climate progress, assess greenhouse gas emissions, analyze just transitions, and develop finance transparency strategies.

As part of ICAT’s Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Uptake (MELU) framework, the intern will directly contribute to measuring the real-world impact of ICAT’s projects. The position offers unparalleled exposure to international climate governance and collaboration with leading stakeholders such as the UNFCCC, UNDP, UNEP, and more.


Tasks

The intern will work under the guidance of the Project Management Support Senior Officer and be responsible for supporting the MELU framework. Key duties include:

Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning, and Uptake (MELU) Reporting

  • Collect and organize data related to ICAT-supported country projects
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to assess performance indicators
  • Develop visualizations, charts, and dashboards to support internal and external reporting
  • Assist in producing MELU reports for internal monitoring and stakeholder dissemination

Grants Management Support

  • Assist with the compilation and analysis of data related to funding disbursements and grant performance
  • Help track progress of country-level projects against milestones and deliverables
  • Support documentation and quality assurance of grantee reporting

Research & Policy Support

  • Conduct background research on climate transparency frameworks, monitoring systems, and national policies
  • Summarize findings to inform impact assessments and strategic planning
  • Contribute to knowledge products and communications material for outreach efforts

Training & Capacity Building

  • Participate in ICAT Secretariat meetings and relevant high-level climate-related events
  • Engage with UNOPS Communities of Practice, including project management, innovation, gender mainstreaming, and more
  • Use access to internal systems and project files to support academic or thesis research (if applicable)

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Must be enrolled in a graduate-level university program (Master’s or Ph.D.) in environmental studies, climate policy, public administration, economics, international relations, development studies, or related fields
  • Recent graduates (within three years of graduation) may also be considered under UNOPS internship policy

Experience

  • Familiarity with climate change policy, greenhouse gas tracking, or environmental monitoring is preferred
  • Experience in data collection, analysis, and visualization (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau) is an asset
  • Strong research and writing skills with the ability to synthesize complex technical information
  • Interest in international development, multilateral processes, and global environmental frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multicultural environments

Language

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required
  • Knowledge of another UN language (e.g., French, Spanish, Arabic) is an asset
