The United Nations University (UNU) has opened its 2025 call for applications for the Government Fellows Program under its Policy-Driven Electronic Governance Operating Unit (UNU-EGOV). This paid fellowship offers a unique opportunity for professionals in the public sector to collaborate with international research teams on digital governance projects. Selected fellows will earn approximately $850 per month and benefit from free accommodation during their three-month term.

UNU-EGOV works on policy-relevant research and supports the digital transformation of governance systems. It conducts projects addressing topics like smart cities, digital public services, AI in governance, and data privacy. Fellows will support ongoing projects, apply research findings in their home institutions, and develop tools for real-world governance improvements.

Tasks

Government Fellows will be expected to:

  • Develop real-life case studies based on experience from their own organization.
  • Translate UNU-EGOV’s research into policy instruments.
  • Apply and validate these tools in their home country or organization.
  • Review project deliverables and contribute to their improvement.
  • Support dissemination of findings in their respective networks.
  • Contribute to the overall development of UNU-EGOV’s research activities.

Fellows will be part of a multidisciplinary team working under the supervision of UNU-EGOV researchers.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:

  • Informatics
  • Information Systems
  • Public Administration
  • Public Policy
  • Development Management
  • Economics
  • Communication Sciences
  • Sociology
  • Law

Experience

Required:

  • Must currently hold civil servant or international civil servant status.
  • Must have professional responsibility in public sector modernization or technology.
  • Proven experience in national or international-level projects or policy design.

Desirable:

  • Teamwork and results-oriented mindset.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Multicultural and international experience.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Monthly Salary: Approximately $850 (EUR 745)
  • Other Benefits: Free accommodation provided (excluding utilities)
  • Contract Type: Consultant Contract (CTC)
  • Duration: 3 months
  • Start Dates: Four intake rounds annually (January, April, July, October)
  • Deadline: 15 October every year for next-year placements
