The United Nations University (UNU) has announced a new hiring opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Technology and Sustainability. This full-time, paid position offers a monthly salary between $3,000 and $3,291 and is based on-site under a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA).

This role is located within the UNU Institute in Macau, a research arm of UNU that focuses on leveraging digital technologies to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a global think tank and postgraduate teaching organization, UNU contributes to policy-relevant research, education, and knowledge dissemination across a broad range of social and technological disciplines.

The successful candidate will collaborate with global teams on research in digital innovation, ethics in technology, and SDG-aligned initiatives. This role is ideal for recent PhD graduates seeking to strengthen their academic and applied research profile in a multidisciplinary, international environment.

Tasks

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of a Senior Researcher and be responsible for a range of duties, including:

Research

  • Conduct research and contribute to ongoing projects involving digital technology and sustainable development.
  • Collect and analyze both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Collaborate on reports, journal articles, and policy documents.
  • Contribute research in the candidate’s own area of expertise to UNU’s academic portfolio.
  • Explore topics such as technology-facilitated violence, ethical tech governance, AI interactions, online safety, and digital gender issues.

Capacity Building

  • Assist in the development and delivery of training workshops and educational programs aligned with SDG-related digital themes.
  • Support curriculum creation for teaching modules on digital technology and sustainability.

Project Management and Funding

  • Help manage and coordinate research project timelines and deliverables.
  • Maintain partnerships and relationships with stakeholders for project success.
  • Identify and assist in applying for research grants and funding opportunities.

Knowledge Mobilization

  • Translate research findings into actionable policy recommendations and public applications.
  • Engage with UN agencies, industry partners, and community stakeholders to increase visibility and impact of research.

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in organizing research events such as conferences, webinars, and workshops.
  • Represent UNU in academic and policy-related outreach events as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

Applicants must hold a PhD or have submitted their PhD for examination in one of the following fields:

  • Social Sciences (e.g., Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology)
  • Applied Statistics
  • Development or Cultural Studies
  • Human Geography
  • Other relevant disciplines

Experience

Required:

  • Demonstrated involvement in research projects focused on digital technology and development.
  • Strong publication or policy writing record, or conference presentations.
  • Proficiency in qualitative and/or quantitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo, SPSS, R, STATA, MAXQDA, Mplus).
  • Experience working in international or multicultural teams.
  • High motivation to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Willingness to relocate and reside full-time in Macau (remote work is not permitted).

Desirable:

  • Experience teaching or training on research methodologies.
  • Prior work on AI tools or tech ethics.
  • Successful track record in obtaining research funding.
  • Experience in multistakeholder environments (public, private, or nonprofit sectors).
  • Previous collaboration with UN entities or similar international organizations.

Additional Information

Key Job Facts

  • Contract Type: Personnel Service Agreement (PSA)
  • Contract Duration: 1-year initial contract, renewable up to 6 years
  • Location: On-site, full-time in Macau SAR (no remote work)
  • Salary: USD $36,000–$39,500 per year (approx. $3,000–$3,291 per month)
