Are you an expert in environmental health and passionate about reducing health risks tied to climate change, air pollution, and toxic exposures?

The World Health Organization (WHO) is recruiting a Regional Adviser for the Climate Change, Health and Environment Unit within the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO), based in Africa.

📅 Contract: 1-year, renewable

The environmental determinants of health—air pollution, toxic chemicals, and climate-related risks—are among the leading global threats. As a Regional Adviser, you’ll shape health responses to these challenges across the African region. This role goes beyond technical work to include strategic leadership, policy development, and regional coordination.

You’ll influence sustainable development goals (SDGs), build national capacity, strengthen emergency preparedness, and embed health in climate and environmental policies.


🧩 Key Responsibilities

  • Support national frameworks on air pollution, chemical safety, and environmental health

  • Lead technical advisory missions and develop guidance tools

  • Coordinate data collection and reporting on SDG 3.9, 12.4, and 13.1

  • Strengthen emergency preparedness for chemical and radiological incidents

  • Foster partnerships across ministries, UN agencies, and WHO Collaborating Centres

  • Mobilize resources for climate and health initiatives

  • Advocate for environmental justice and sustainable public health policy


🎓 Minimum Requirements

📘 Education

  • Essential: Master’s degree in Public Health with a specialization in Environmental Health

  • Desirable: Additional training in sanitary or wastewater engineering is advantageous

🏆 Experience

  • At least 10 years’ experience in environmental health, pollution control, or chemical risk management

  • Experience in international settings, including developing countries

💼 Core Competencies

  • Technical expertise in air quality, toxic chemicals, and emergency preparedness

  • Strong leadership, diplomacy, and policy advisory skills

  • Familiarity with multilateral partnerships and UN system coordination

🌐 Language Proficiency

  • Required: Fluent English

  • Desirable: Knowledge of Arabic, French, or another WHO language


💸 Salary & Benefits

  • Base salary: USD 101,540/year

  • Post Adjustment: Approx. USD 2,555/month (location-dependent)

  • Estimated Total Salary: USD 10,000+ per month

  • Estimated Daily Rate: USD 333/day
