World Bank Legal Internship Program
The World Bank Legal Vice Presidency (LEG VPU) provides law students with hands-on experience in the legal operations of the World Bank. Interns work closely with staff in the Legal Vice Presidency, engaging in real-world legal work that contributes to the organization’s mission of reducing global poverty and improving development outcomes.
Internship Locations:
- World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
- Selected Country Offices where a Legal Vice Presidency lawyer is present
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the World Bank Legal Internship Program, applicants must: ✔ Be a citizen of an IBRD member state ✔ Be currently enrolled in an LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent legal academic program at the time of application ✔ Have an excellent command of the English language ✔ Preferably, have proficiency in one or more of the IBRD working languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish)
Internship Cycles & Application Deadlines
The World Bank Legal Internship Program is offered three times a year, each cycle lasting 10–12 weeks:
🔹 Summer Internship (June – August)
📅 Application period: December 1 – December 31
🔹 Fall Internship (September – November)
📅 Application period: April 1 – April 30
🔹 Spring Internship (March – May)
📅 Application period: September 1 – September 30
Important: All applications must be submitted within the respective application periods. Late applications will not be considered.
How to Apply
Applicants must submit the following documents through the official World Bank Careers Portal:
- Résumé (CV)
- Statement of Interest
- Proof of enrollment in a law degree program (LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent) along with academic transcripts
- Short essay responding to a research question posed by the Legal Vice Presidency for the application cycle
Roles & Responsibilities of Interns
During the internship, participants will: ✔ Conduct legal research and analysis on global development issues ✔ Assist in drafting legal documents and policy papers ✔ Participate in high-profile legal events and conferences ✔ Support the organization of legal workshops and team meetings ✔ Work on comparative legal analysis and review policy frameworks
