WWF’s mission is to halt environmental degradation and promote sustainable resource use while reducing pollution and wasteful consumption. WWF South Africa has been actively working for over 50 years to inspire positive environmental action for the country’s benefit and people’s well-being.

About the Role

The Greening Financial Regulation Specialist will support the Greening Financial Regulation Initiative (GFRi) in South Africa and Africa, collaborating with central banks, financial regulators, and supervisory bodies to advance sustainable finance regulations. Reporting to both WWF South Africa’s Sustainable Finance Lead and the GFRi Lead in Switzerland, this role focuses on regulatory engagement, stakeholder coordination, and facilitating public-private collaboration for climate adaptation and nature-positive investments. The position plays a critical role in integrating sustainability into financial regulation, particularly in the context of the G20 Presidency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Regulatory and Policy Research: Review developments in financial regulation, supervision, and prudential measures related to nature-related risks and financial impact assessment.
  • Risk Management Analysis: Evaluate supervisory expectations on nature-related risk assessments, scenario analysis, stress testing, and prudential disclosures.
  • Sustainable Finance Frameworks: Assess how nature and biodiversity are integrated into green taxonomies in Africa and explore corporate disclosure requirements for financial institutions.
  • Policy Advocacy & Thought Leadership: Develop an analytical report on nature-related financial risks and opportunities, presenting insights at the G20 Summit in South Africa.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Support WWF’s collaboration with the South African Reserve Bank, financial supervisors, and global regulatory networks to promote green financial regulations.
  • Event and Workshop Coordination: Assist in organizing GFRi-related events and workshops in Africa during the G20 Presidency.
  • Fundraising & Partnerships: Identify and contribute to funding opportunities to advance GFRi’s objectives.
  • Internal Collaboration: Engage with WWF’s Finance Practice and cross-functional teams to align financial sustainability initiatives with conservation goals.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Postgraduate degree in Economics, Finance, or Business.
  • Experience: 5 to 8 years in policy development, regulatory oversight, financial compliance, or legislative development.
  • Financial & Research Skills: Strong financial analysis, budgeting, research, and publication experience.
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience in banking regulation, supervision, nature-related policy issues, and sustainability reporting.
  • Networking & Negotiation: Proven ability to engage with regulators, industry leaders, investors, and government agencies.
  • Project Management: Expertise in managing large projects, working with third parties, and coordinating funding partners.
  • Global & Regional Perspective: Experience in emerging markets and familiarity with African financial regulatory environments.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to Conservation: Passion for WWF’s mission and sustainability initiatives.
