The United Nations University (UNU) is inviting applications for the Senior Researcher & Team Lead position at its Institute in Macau. This is an outstanding opportunity for experienced researchers and academics with expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital technologies, data science, ethics, sustainability, and public policy to lead internationally recognized research that contributes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Position Overview

Position: Senior Researcher & Team Lead

This leadership role involves:

  • Leading internationally recognized AI and digital technology research
  • Managing multidisciplinary research teams
  • Developing research programmes aligned with UNU’s strategic priorities
  • Securing international research grants and funding
  • Building partnerships with governments, UN agencies, universities, NGOs, and donors
  • Supervising research projects from concept to publication
  • Supporting education and professional training initiatives
  • Representing UNU at global conferences and policy forums 

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will:

  • Lead innovative research on AI and sustainable development
  • Supervise interdisciplinary researchers and research students
  • Manage project budgets and research funding
  • Publish in leading academic journals
  • Produce policy briefs, UN reports, blogs, and research publications
  • Present findings at international conferences
  • Develop educational programmes and professional training
  • Build strategic partnerships with global stakeholders
  • Ensure research meets ethical standards and donor requirements

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Studies, Development Studies, Communication Studies, Economics, Computational Social Science, or a related discipline
  • At least five years of postdoctoral experience
  • Experience leading successful academic research programmes
  • Experience managing research teams
  • Strong publication record
  • Experience overseeing research budgets and operations
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Passion for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals 

Desirable Experience

Candidates with the following experience are encouraged to apply:

Work Location

Contract Duration

  • Full-time appointment
  • Initial one-year fixed-term contract
  • Renewable based on satisfactory performance
  • Maximum combined appointment period of six years for academic positions
